SPS (Small Polyped Stony
corals) are corals that have
small polyps on a calcareouss
skeleton. In many instances
they are either branching or
plated. SPS corals like the
Acropora require high light
output and strong intermittent
water movement, wile the
Montipora requires medium
lighting combined with a
medium water movement.
Most SPS corals receive the
majority of their nutritional
requirements from
photosynthesis. So lighting
like metal halides, multiple T-
5, power compacts, or VHO
fluorescents are ideal
conditions for your SPS (Small
Polyped Stony corals). Water
movement is also a
determining factor in keeping
a healthy SPS coral, a strong,
intermittent water flow, with a
wavemaker and multiple
powerheads should
accomplish these. To
maximize their growth rate, it
is imperative to maintain a
high pH of 8.1 to 8.2, alkalinity
of 8 to 12 and calcium levels
of 300 to 400, these can be
done with the use of a
Calcium Reactor or with a two
part alkalinity and calcium
supplement. Keep phosphate
and nitrate levels as close to
zero as possible. These can be
done with the use of a
phoshate Reactor and nitrate
levels with a Refugium or a
nitrate Reactor. Even thaw
your SPS coral receive the
majority of their nutritional
requirements from
photosynthesis, you still need
to feed your SPS coral. Feed
your coral various types of
phytoplankton like DT's Live
phytoplankton or Liquid Life
USA BioPlankton, and
zooplankton, like Liquid Life
USA Marine Plankton or
Cyclop-Eeze. Baby brine
shrimp will be a useful food
sores. You will find many
different species of Acropora
corals such as table top, bottle
brush, staghorn and others
like Montipora Encrusting
Coral, Montipora capricornis,
Ruffled Ridge Coral, Pink
Birdsnest Coral, Stylophora
Coral, Montipora digitata, Cup
Coral, Pavona Coral, Spiny
Cup Pectinia Coral, Merulina
Coral. Note Care should be
taken when acclimating your
SPS coral. (see ower care
guides for proper acclimating
procedure)
