Wave Makers and
Timers
When you are
attempting to recreate a
whole natural ecological niche
using an entirely artificial set
up, you should really consider
all the minute details there is,
especially when it comes to
setting up a salt water
aquarium or fish tank. The
success of the entire
operation lies on the salt
water hobbyist and his or her
attention to detail. Now, this is
not at all an easy thing to
consider since one ecological
niche is already a whole world
operating on its own.
However, there are now ways
and mean to achieve this near
impossible task.
It is
fortunate that salt water
aquarium specialists are
taking account of details that
regular people
may overlook. We are of
course referring to wave
makers and timers. You may
not want to believe it, but the
installation of a small wave
maker device in your salt
water aquarium or fish tanks
has a number of benefits.
One: It
recreates exactly the not-so-
placid nature of sea waters.
Sea waters are
never calm, not even during
those so called calm-water
days. The steady movement
of the water and the pull of
the tides contribute to the
creation of waves, both large
and small. Now if you really
want your salt water
aquarium and fish tank
inhabitants to
experience sea
life, you need to at least
make sure that you can
regulate wave-like water
movements within the tank.
Not only does this encourage
your marine pets to behave
like they would do in the wild,
it also encourages the other
inhabitants of the enclosure to
perform their most
fundamental
tasks.
Two: It
encourages corals to perform
filtration – one of their
most basic tasks.
Corals are colonies
of polyps that act as one
organism. One of their most
basic tasks is to filter
nutrients from the passing
water, and thereby filtering
the water for any form of
impurities. They serve as the
most efficient biological filters
there is. Unfortunately, corals
are stationary. They need to
anchor themselves unto rock
or sand surfaces in order to
achieve sapience. Wave
makers are thereby essential
to the filtering prowess of the
corals because these devices
help move the water by
providing currents.
These currents help
carry away waste products
and help re-introduce re-
oxygenated water. This way,
you can be sure your
aquarium will be all the more
cleaner.
Three:
Wave makers provide an
avenue of exchange for
artificial or mechanical filters.
In this case, we are
talking about protein skimmer
devices in particular. Although
biological filter may serve
their purpose, most salt water
aquariums and fish tanks
have so many inhabitants that
this ecological niche would
need a bit of a mechanical
aid. Protein skimmer devices
are usually combined with
natural filters because the
former is the only form of
filter that physically removes
solid waste products from the
waters. However, in order for
protein skimmer devices to
work properly, there should
be great movements of water
from within. Wave maker and
timer devices are more than
capable to provide these
movements.
